Classic Turkish Shepherd's salad - 'çoban salata'

This classic Turkish shepherd's salad is a staple in Turkish cuisine, but also in other cuisines as well! It's so simple to prepare. Its origins can be traced back to ancient times when it was a staple in the diets of shepherds and nomadic communities across the Anatolian region. Over time, the salad evolved, incorporating the flavours of lemon juice, olive oil, and fresh herbs like parsley, which are characteristic of Turkish cuisine.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 small to medium-sized cucumbers

  • 3 ripe tomatoes

  • 2 green peppers

  • 1 lemon

  • 1 onion

  • A handful of fresh parsley

  • Olive oil

  • Salt

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Begin by finely chopping the cucumbers, ripe tomatoes, green peppers, and onion. The key is to achieve uniform, bite-sized pieces.

  2. Once your vegetables are prepared, squeeze the juice from half a lemon over the chopped ingredients. This adds a zesty brightness to the salad.

  3. Drizzle a generous amount of olive oil over the salad. The richness of the olive oil perfectly complements the fresh ingredients.

  4. Sprinkle a pinch of salt over the salad. Adjust the salt to your taste preference.

  5. Now, it's time to mix it all together. Gently toss the ingredients until they are well combined, allowing the flavours to meld.

  6. Finish your Çoban Salatası with a handful of fresh parsley, roughly chopped. This adds a burst of vibrant color and an extra layer of freshness.

Enjoy!
